For the past 14th years the annual Community Cup clash between musicians from the Espy Rock Dogs and the Megahertz team of broadcasters from Triple R and PBS has raised money for the fine work of St Kilda’s Sacred Heart Mission. Unfortunately it seems that due to the escalating costs of organising and staging this match this year Melbourne may miss out on the chance to see its favourite rockers pulling hammies in heroic efforts as they stagger along the wing to on field glory. Last year more than 18,000 people rocked up to the Junction Oval and paid $5 each to see the game, which featured a half-time set by Mach Pelican and umpires dressed as the Ramones.
It’s a sad loss to the Melbourne sporting and musical fixture but there’s still a chance to support the mission and catch your favourite musicians and comedians at the same time.
The Sacred Heart Mission’s Heart of St Kilda Concert is on this Friday – the 23rd of May – at the Palais Theatre and features acclaimed Paul Kelly, Kate Ceberano, Tex Perkins, Kev Carmody, Brian Nankervis, Julia Zemiro, Choir of Hard Knocks, Lawrence Mooney, Renee Geyer, Deborah Conway, Colin Lane and many more in a huge night of entertainment.
TICKETS ARE STILL AVALIABLE HERE
Sacred Heart Mission helps people who find themselves on the fringes of mainstream society. The Mission provides meals, crisis support, health and personal care, employment training, sport, recreation, home care, housing, hostel care and support for women working in street prostitution. They aim to bring dignity and respect into the lives of people of all ages who live in poverty, to assist them to develop independence and to advocate on their behalf. The Sacred Heart Mission provides meals – 7 days a week, 365 days a year – to people who are homeless or living in poverty – and NEVER turns anyone away. With the proceeds from the Heart of St Kilda Concert they’re hoping to raise enough funds for 30,000 meals.
