Beginning in 2001 with their debut EP, The Butterfly Effect have grown to become a benchmark band on the Australian live circuit. Lengthy tours and sold out shows all over the country throughout the years has certainly helped that come to fruition. When your art becomes your job however, hobbies are hard to come by as I found out.

“You know what…. i don’t know what I’m into anymore!” mused front man Clint Boge chilling at his bris-vegas home. “I think I’m just mainly into movies, buying new cd’s and playing a shitload of x box. That and watching Play School and all these wacky kid shows with my son.”

He can certainly afford to relax and soak up some isolated radiation too, with the completion of their follow up album The Final Conversation of Kings to 2006’s gold selling Imago-the album reaching that status in a mere 8 weeks.

“I think it’s up to the 50- 60,000 mark or something. But I definitely don’t feel like we need to top any album” He said confidently.”It used to be like that in the beginning y’know. I think you mature as you go through, and really it becomes more about writing good songs, playing great shows and mastering your instrument a little better.”

“Not having a great deal of commercial success first up has helped us grow quite organically. I think you get more credibility from your grass roots hardcore fans” Clint states. “That way people get a chance to adjust to your growth. I’ve seen some bands that have a big underground following, then explode onto the commercial scene and the next album comes out and its full of pop hits written by some butthole with a computer in a tiny music factory. And that’s where the backlash begins.”

It’s this attitude that has helped the band reach their goals quite naturally.
“We’ve tried to remain really focused on the sound that we have and the people that we are, trying to stay true to our old fans. I’m not saying ‘keep it real’ because that’s a stupid fucking saying. Maybe keeping what you do organic and natural. When you force anything nothing good comes of it.”

Deciding to utilize the slick production of Australian powerhouse producer Forrester Savell for their new album proved to be quite fruitful too.”We like Forrester. He’s a good dude, very hands on. He’s mixed and recorded Karnivool, Sleep Parade and had a hand in a lot over other Aussie releases, so we really respect his opinion.” cited Clint. “It takes a lot of pressure off to be able do it in Australia at home as opposed to a foreign country an especially LA. You can quite easily get swept up in the lifestyle, it really is La-la land. It’s not a real place as far as I’m concerned.”

“This time going to the Grove studio just out of Gosford, we were locked away, just 5 weeks of intensive music every day.” he said. “I trained, went jogging, worked the boxing bag, ate healthy and we really got into the whole psyche of being a band. I think it translates through the songs, the music and the sound and I hope people are able to pick up on that.”

“On this album we’re trying to refine our sound, and thats whats different between the albums. It was very raw for Begins Here, then refined it a bit more for Imago and this time the songs themselves are a bit more refined.” Clint explained. “The ability to add extra instruments this time has allowed us to explore our sound, and i think next album we’ll expand on that and see where we can go with it. We’re definitely not done by a long shot”

Coming up to ten years in existence as a band, the boys have seen and experienced a lot of changes.
“Over the years we’ve seen a real resurgence in patriotism to our music. I think Australia has the best market and we’re more fanatic and hardcore than anyone about our music. For me music is not about money or possession, it’s about writing the best tunes. The fact that Australians dig it and were writing music for our fans, that’s the main thing.”

With a massive aptly titled Australian Tour booked and waiting, Clint is stoked to be hitting the road. “We’ve made so many friends in every corner of the country, and it really is like catching up with friends. Basically we’ve booked a tour to go and catch up with everyone you know!”
