Crowded House, Shihad, Russell Crowe… Us Australians have a habit of poaching every one of New Zealand’s success stories and claiming them as our own (the word ‘Antipodean’ comes in very handy in this instance). Evermore, the band made up of Jon (vocals, guitar), Peter (keyboards, vocals) and Dann (drums, vocals), is the latest example of how greedy we are.
Though the three brothers grew up playing together, they formed with schoolmate Richard Higham in 2000, named after Led Zeppelin track The Battle of Evermore. Though Higham left the band soon after, the brothers continued on and released the Oil and Water and My Own Way EPs in 2003.
Though debut album Dreams hit shelves in September 2004, it wasn’t until It’s Too Late appeared on US TV show The OC that the band really broke into the mainstream market. The song hit number 15 on the ARIA singles chart and their newfound success landed them a spot on the East Coast dates of the Big Day Out in January 2005.
Real Life, the follow-up album was released midway through 2006 and the band set off on a huge national tour to mark the occasion. The album peaked at number five in Australia and number two in New Zealand, while Light Surrounding You, the second single from the album, debuted at the top of the ARIA charts.
